Note: Current-gen Xcent used for representational purpose.
Hyundai has been preparing the first major update for the Xcent sedan for some time with camouflaged prototypes spied testing on public roads. And now we know that the India-bound Xcent’s interiors will be as premium as the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios. The compact sedan could share bits like the blacked-out dashboard, steering wheel and turbine-like air vents with its hatchback sibling. Other additions could include leather upholstery and adjustable head restraints for the rear bench. It is expected to debut at Auto Expo 2020 with an India launch soon after. Expect it to be priced at a slight premium over its predecessor owing to the upgrades needed to make the current set of 1.2-litre petrol and diesel engines BS6-compliant.
As we already know through earlier spy shots, the next-gen Xcent will be an evolution of the current one as the basic silhouette is almost the same. Expected exterior changes include a bigger cascading front grille with honeycomb inserts, sharper projector headlamps and LED taillamps. Other changes may include the repositioning of the number plate to the rear bumper like the Ford Aspire.
Aside from the above mentioned interior details, the Xcent is also expected to feature the floating infotainment system seen in the Venue. Expect features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as BlueLink connected car technology from the Hyundai Venue.
As mentioned before, the 2020 Xcent is likely to carry forward the 1.2-litre diesel and petrol engines, albeit with a host of upgrades to meet the upcoming BS6 emission norms. Currently, the petrol engine puts out 83PS and 114Nm of torque, whereas the diesel churns out 75PS and 190Nm. While the current engines come mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox, expect the 4-speed torque converter automatic in the petrol to be ditched in favour of the 5-speed AMT from the Santro as AMTs are more cost efficient.
The current iteration of the Xcent is priced from Rs 5.81 lakh to Rs 8.75 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Expect the Xcent to rekindle its rivalry with the Ford Aspire, Maruti Suzuki Dzire and the Honda Amaze once it launches in India.
